Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Below are the spellings children are expected to be familiar with by the end of Year 4. Whilst children are exposed to these spellings in school, it would also benefit them to practise at home. Children are encouraged to use their phonics knowledge to help them spell both new and familiar vocabulary.

Some of these spellings are high frequency words, whereas others may not follow the typical phonics rules that they are taught. These are known as common exception words (or 'tricky words') and may appear in both the Y1/2 and Y3/4 spelling lists.

Spelling Practice

There are a variety of ways for children to learn spellings, such as applying them in sentences or testing themselves/each other. Please see the document attached below for more ways your child could practise.
