Multiplication Fluency

By the end of Year 4, children should be able to confidently recall their times tables up to 12x12. Over the year, they will participate in daily practise of these multiplication facts. Going forward, having secure knowledge of their times tables will enable children to become more confident in various areas of their learning, particularly multiplication and division, as well as fractions and percentages.

Ways to practise

To increase their recall speed and fluency of multiplication facts, children may practise their times tables at home. They could:

- Chant fowards and backwards in each times table

- Find missing multiples (they could be removed from a number line/grid). You could use https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

- There are lots of times tables songs on the BBC teach website the children could learn. Use this link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/times-table-collection/z4vv6v4. Alternatively, a similar one can be found below:

- Play multiplication games to increase their recall speed - see a list of resources below

Bingo - You could call out times tables questions which need to be answered, or answers for children to identify the related multiplication equation.

Find my legs!- you will need two dice and a piece of paper.

🕷 Draw the body of a spider and 8 circles (4 on each side of the body). 🕷In the circles write a multiple of 7 (number in the 7 times table) between 2x and 12x. Please practise all times tables.
🕷 This would be best as a two player game so each player would need a spider’s body.
🕷 The aim of the game is to be the first person to put all the legs on the spider.
🕷 Roll the two dice and add the numbers. If you have that multiple of 7 in one of the circles, you can draw the leg from the body to the circle on the spider. If you don’t have the multiple of 7 you roll again.
🕷 Keep rolling as fast as you can until you have found all of the spiders legs and drawn them on! .

Lucky Cards- adapted this from the classic gameshow ‘Play Your Cards Right’ but with a times tables twist.
Choose your times table and write just the question down on each piece of paper or card. Then you just need to turn them over and play!
♦️ Shuffle the cards well and lay out 6 face down.
♦️ The gameshow host turns over the first card and asks the contestants to shout out the answer.
♦️ They must then decide if they think the next card will be higher or lower than the first one.
♦️ Once decided, turn the next card over and ask the contestants to shout out the answer. If they chose higher or lower correctly, they continue playing, if not the game is over.
♦️ Repeat choosing higher or lower until you have either turned over all the cards on the board or you guessed incorrectly!
